　　科波拉早年在B级电影的传奇人物罗杰.科尔曼手下打工，包括音响制作、剪辑和其他任务，当时科曼想利用刚制作完成的B级片《年轻车手》的剩余资金，来资助一部希区柯克式的低成本心理惊悚片。科波拉很快完成了脚本，剧本中大量裸露和血腥情节令科曼很满意，于是给科波拉开了绿灯，让这位有前途的新人亲自执导，这也成为科波拉首次独立执导的长片处女作。尽管预算微薄，但科波拉还是很好地利用资源，聘请了包括摄影、灯光师在内的有创意的年轻制作小组，最终完成了这部经典邪教恐怖电影。
